TUPELO – Art of Dying is standing on the edge of fame, and the guys are digging the view.
The Canadian hard rock band just released its major-label debut CD, “Vices and Virtues,” and is opening up on the Avalanche Tour with heavy hitters like Theory of a Deadman and Stone Sour.
Art of Dying – lead singer Jonny Hetherington, bassist Cale Gontier, drummer Jeff Brown and guitarists Greg Bradley and Tavis Stanley – is at a great place right now.
“Everybody’s super-excited right now. We’ve been working really hard on this record,” Gontier said. “Our whole lives have been sunk into this record. We’re super-stoked we’re about to hit the road.”
Light in the dark
With a backdrop of heavy, melodic rock ‘n’ roll, Art of Dying has crafted a passionate, lyrically positive record. Tracks like “Get Thru This” emphasize hope: “If I can get thru this/I can get thru anything.”
Hope and positivity are huge to Art of Dying, so much so that its in the band’s name.
“This whole record encompasses our whole lives and how we live them. There’s an overall positive vibe. That’s how we roll. It goes back to our band name, Art of Dying, but it comes back to a longer sentence: It’s the art of living,” Gontier said. “Once you realize that eventually everyone’s gonna die, so do the best with the time you have. That’s how we live every day.”
That passion for life spills over into the group’s live show.
“We give it 110 percent, and we come out flying,” the bass player said.
Art of Dying plans to perform some of its more upbeat songs, like the single “Die Trying,” and maybe throw in one ballad.
“It’s so much fun. It’s what we live for. I’m super-excited just talking about it. I can’t wait to hit the stage and show the people what we’re doing,” Gontier said.
While many ticket-holders will be hoping to see Stone Sour, Theory of a Deadman and Skillet, Gontier hopes fans will turn out to see the opening act.
“This is gonna be a fantastic rock show. There are lots of eager, talented bands, and we’re gonna put on a show that you don’t wanna miss,” he said. “You’re gonna like what we’re doing.”
