Back in the ring: WWE Diva Layla returns to wrestling after knee injury

By Sheena Barnett/NEMS Daily Journal

For WWE Diva Layla, it’s like she never left the ring. The British wrestler, who’d scored plenty of titles and had been one half of the powerhouse Lay-Cool team, was sidelined for much of 2011 and early 2012. But in April, after a year’s worth of physical rehab, Layla returned to the squared circle and defeated Nikki Bella for the Divas Title.
“This year has been amazing for me. I cannot complain. Life is great,” she said in a phone interview with the Daily Journal. “I’ve worked very hard to get back into it. It’s a dream come true, and 2012 is the year I validated that you can conquer your fears and do thinks you thought you couldn’t.”
Layla’s back in the ring with a sparkly knee brace.
“It actually feels stronger than my other knee,” she said. “The brace is out of precaution. I don’t want to let myself down, or anybody else down. There’s no way I can re-injure that again. And (the brace) is cool, right? It’ll be sad once I’m finally be done with it, because I want something iced out on my leg – who doesn’t?”
Layla, who started her career as a dancer, still dances to get ring-ready.
“I put on my iPod and blast upbeat music I have to warm up,” she said. “And I always say a little prayer, just to say thank you, because you don’t realize you can get hurt, and when you do get hurt, you’re always a little more thankful and grateful to enjoy that moment and enjoy the fans.”
She’ll be joined by other stars at the Tupelo show.
John Cena and Tensai will battle in a Last Man Standing Match, and Christian, The Miz and Dolph Ziggler will go head-to-head in a Triple Threat Match for the Intercontinental Championship.
Ryback will make his debut at the Tupelo show.
Layla is excited for those matches as well as her own, and she said she hopes the crowd has as much fun as the wrestlers in the ring.
“WWE puts on one of the best shows in the world. It’s just one of those shows that it’s an amazing privilege to be a part of,” she said. “It’s gonna be fun to take over Mississippi for that one day.”
