TUPELO – Rev into the past this weekend at the Blue Suede Cruise.

The annual classic car show will take over the BancorpSouth Arena, complete with music, movies, food and more.

“We have 425 pre-registrations,” said Allen McDaniel, who’s in charge of Blue Suede Cruise. “That’s the most we’ve ever had.”

The event kicks off tonight at sunset with a drive-in movie at the arena. The name of the film can’t be publicized, but it’s a crowd-pleaser, McDaniel said.

SCN-0501-Cruiseposter-4c“We always play an Elvis movie, but this year it’s a western with a different king,” McDaniel said.

The festival kicks off at 9 a.m. Friday when the lot opens for visitors.

KOTO, the official cruise DJ, will spin tunes all day.

The poker run sites will open at 2 p.m.

The cruise hasn’t been so lucky with weather in the past, so this year the music stages have been moved inside the arena. The Rogues will perform at 5 p.m. Friday.

“There will be seating and areas for folks to bring in chairs, and there will be a dance floor,” McDaniel said. The Gents will close the night at 7:30 p.m.

A classic car parade kicks off the festival at 9 a.m. Saturday.

“It’s the 50th anniversary of the Ford Mustang, so we’ll let the Mustangs lead the parade this year,” McDaniel said.

KOTO the DJ will perform again Saturday, and The Gents will perform at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. The Paul Rainey Band will perform at 7:30 p.m.

The lot will be open from 8 to 10:45 a.m. Sunday, and will include drawings and poker-run winner announcements.

The movie, entertainment and checking out of the cars is all free.

The arena is handling concessions, so there will be plenty of food.

“What an impact this has on the city of Tupelo,” McDaniel said. “We have people from 13 states and Canada who are coming here for this event. This is an event that will be fun for the whole family. It’ll be like taking a walk down memory lane.”
