Celebrate ‘Star Wars’ Day at Link Centre

TUPELO – Since the first film premiered more than 35 years ago, the “Star Wars” franchise has continued to enthrall fans and find new ones in every generation.

As a take-off on one of the movies’ most famous quotes, “May the force be with you,” fans celebrate the series on May 4 – get it? “May the 4th be with you” – each year. Fans across the world are celebrating Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Princess Leia, Yoda and the whole “Star Wars” universe with movie-related events.

This year, the Link Centre in Tupelo is getting in on the action.

“It’s the 30th anniversary of the release of ‘Return of the Jedi,’ so we’re going to do a quote-along of that,” said Derek Russell, Link Centre’s director of operations. “But we have way more planned.”

“Way more” includes a 10-foot-tall recreated original “Return of the Jedi” action figure package.

“You can step into it and be your own action figure,” Russell said.

Kids can make their own light sabers, and, obviously, costumes are welcome.

There will be a costume and trivia contest, with “Star Wars”-related prizes.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. for activities, with the quote along starting at 6:30 p.m.

“It’ll be lots of fun for kids and kids at heart,” Russell said.

The event is a continuation of the Link Centre’s Words with Films series, which has included a series of quote-alongs and live script reads.
