CORINTH – Lucy wanted to be in the show, and Molly Burcham wants to be in the wedding.
The “I Love Lucy” wedding, that is.
Burcham and her fiancé, Clay Young, are in the running for a Lucille Ball Hometown Wedding. Ball, star of “I Love Lucy,” would’ve turned 100 this year, and her hometown, Jamestown, N.Y., is giving away a “Lucy”-inspired wedding to one couple.
Young and Burcham, from Corinth, are the only couple from the South in the running, and Burcham is the only natural red-head.
The winning couple is chosen by an Internet vote, and will win a wedding ceremony at the Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Center Tropicana Room on July 30, a reception, a 1950s-inspired Lucille Ball bridal gown, a honeymoon to Niagra Falls and more.
“I’ve been a big Lucy fan all my life – you know, with the red hair,” Burcham said. “I’ve always enjoyed watching it, and I’ve got a pretty good size collection of Lucy stuff. I was just so excited.”
Burcham and Young got engaged in 2009 and were planning to wed this spring or summer. After Burcham heard about the “Lucy” wedding on Facebook, she knew they had to try. They sent in an application and filmed a video about themselves, and were chosen as finalists.
The couple included their spaniel, Bullet, in the video, because Ball and Arnaz had spaniels, too.
Young is an “I Love Lucy” fan as well, but not as big a fan as his bride-to-be.
Burcham collects “Lucy” memorabilia, especially Lucy dolls.
“I’ve got lamps, pillows, car floor mats,” she said.
Since becoming finalists, Burcham and Young have stayed busy asking friends to vote and doing radio interviews.
“They called from Jamestown doing radio interviews, and they asked me if I dyed (my hair) or if it was natural. They were like, ‘Can we ask you a personal question?’ and I was like, ‘Oh no.’ But that’s what they wanted to know, if I just did it for the contest,” Burcham said.
But Burcham’s hair and love for Lucy are both natural.
One of her favorite quotes is one of Lucy’s: “Once in his life, every man is entitled to fall madly in love with a gorgeous redhead.”
