The past 12 months of Lydia and Laura Rogers’ lives have been incredible. The sisters auditioned in Nashville in October 2009, and they enchanted the labels with their old-school sound, a throwback to ‘40s- and ‘50s-style country.
“We had a record deal at the first of the year, and then came T Bone (Burnett) and Jack (White), and it’s just been crazy,” Laura said.
The pair, called The Secret Sisters, released their self-titled debut album in October on Burnett’s label. Music heavyweight White became a fan and early supporter, who has helped shaped The Secret Sisters’ career. The duo toured this fall with Ray LaMontagne and Levon Helm, and just appeared on Letterman. Up next is a tour with Willie Nelson, which will bring the band to Corinth.
“This has been the craziest, most exhausting, awesome year ever. … It’s mind-blowing for a couple of country girls from Alabama. We were just proud to graduate high school,” Laura said, laughing.
Two women and a guitar
The sisters, who hail from Muscle Shoals, admit they’ll be a little starstruck on the Willie Nelson tour.
“It’s the most amazing thing – we’re going to be able to be around him and watch him perform, and maybe we’ll get to sing with him on a couple of songs,” Laura said. “Just to be able to share the bill with him is an honor.”
The Secret Sisters say the stage is their home.
“I really enjoy the touring part more than anything. It’s more real to me,” Lydia said. “It’s so rewarding to be on a stage and see the audience’s faces, and when they react the way they do, you can’t replace it.”
When the pair performs in Corinth, it’ll be just the two of them, without a backing band.
“It keeps us from being too comfortable. It puts the pressure on us, in a good way,” Laura said. “If you can hold your own by just playing a guitar and singing, you have something to build on.”
The Secret Sisters’ planner will remain full into next year.
They will tour with LaMontagne again, but this time in Europe – which will be the sisters’ first trip overseas.
They’ll also tour with Loretta Lynn.
“I’m gonna lose it when she sings ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter,’” Laura said. “I’m just gonna lay on the floor and cry.”
The Secret Sisters hope to go into the studio again.
“It’s funny how you grow as an artist from one year to the next. We feel like we’re completely different people now from when we recorded the first album,” Laura said. “But yes – it’s gonna be a busy 2011 for these girls.”
