Dance Like the Stars

Just like in dancing, Tracy Holton-Garrett’s husband took the lead, and she’s following.
Last year, after Dr. Charles Garrett, superintendent of New Albany schools, signed up to compete in Dance Like the Stars, he and his wife, Tracy Holton-Garrett, fell in love with ballroom dancing. Now, Holton-Garrett is competing in this year’s Dance Like the Stars.
“We had joined Tupelo Ballroom Dance Club, but I’ve never done a Viennese Waltz, so this is a big stretch for me,” she said. “However easy it looks, it’s harder.”
Holton-Garrett and her partner, Dance Studio instructor Robbie Garrett, have been practicing this summer for the fundraiser. Dance Like the Stars asks local celebrities to learn a ballroom dance routine, all while raising money for Boys & Girls Clubs of North Mississippi. Holton-Garrett’s fellow dancers are Rob Baird of Houston; Angelique Ratliff of Ripley; Todd Wade of Oxford; and Rhonda Hanby, Allie Ware, Terri Amacker, Mary Pat Hancock, Sherry Davis, Paul Tucker and Kevin Pierce of Tupelo.
Besides the celebrity dancers, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tupelo Ballroom Dance Team will also perform. The group is made up of youth who have studied ballroom dancing at The Dance Studio and it’s always a highlight of the night, said Boys & Girls Clubs of North Mississippi’s Evie Boyd.
Both Holton-Garrett and her husband have been active with Boys & Girls Clubs for years.
“There was no way we were going to say no. It’s so important for the kids involved,” she said.
She’s also excited – and a little nervous – about her performance for the show.
“I love the whole routine. Robbie’s an amazing choreographer,” said Holton-Garrett, who works at Van Atkins Jewelry in New Albany. “Yes, I am nervous, and no, I don’t think I’m ready, but I’m hopeful I’ll feel that way at the show.”
Though she has a few butterflies, she loves mastering the dance.
“We’ve gotten addicted to it,” she said. “You’re enjoying music and enjoying dancing, just as much as the music. It’s good for the soul and it’s good for the body.”
