Oscar contest champ: ‘Anybody can win’

TUPELO – Greg Bates said his picks for the 2012 Academy Awards were 100 percent luck.
“I didn’t know anything about any of those movies,” the 50-year-old Tupelo resident said. “I haven’t been to a movie since ‘Walking Tall Part 2.’”
All but one of his selections in’s Red Carpet Movie Awards contest were random. Bates went down the list and recognized George Clooney’s name, and picked him for Best Actor.
“That’s one I missed,” he said.
He didn’t miss many. His haphazard process resulted in 10 out of 12 correct answers. That tied him with five other players.
Bates won the tie-breaker, and gets two tickets to Malco Theatres and a $25 gift certificate to Chili’s.
“I’ll go see a movie now that I have the tickets,” he said.
He probably won’t see Best Picture winner “The Artist,” a silent, black and white film.
“I couldn’t imagine spending two hours in the dark reading,” he said.
A couple of years ago, Bates won a 50-inch TV and a $300 gift certificate after taking first place in’s Pro Football Pick ’Em contest. He didn’t fare so well in the college version.
“I think I was 150th,” he said.
As for his Oscar picks: “All this proved to me was anybody can win.”
