TUPELO – Harold Turrentine and his gospel band, Peculiar, are here to lift your soul.
The band is releasing its first album, “My Reality,” this weekend, with a CD release party.
“The concert is multi-purpose: to celebrate the new CD, and taking time out to recognize how God blesses us and takes us to different places,” Turrentine said. “These are songs of inspiration that are geared to encourage, inspire and build up.”
Turrentine began writing the songs for “My Reality” 10 years ago, after going through a difficult time in his life that included divorce and a suicide attempt.
“The bulk of the project is talking about my life – ‘My Reality,’” he said. “There are a variety of styles: contemporary, urban, praise and worship. There’s something everybody can relate to.”
Turrentine comes from a long line of musicians, including his mother, “Queen of Quartet” Evelyn Turrentine-Agee, who’ll host the party along with Rick Joyner.
“I’ve produced seven records for her,” Turrentine said. “I’ve turned down maybe three record deals, because I’ve always wanted to be an independent artist and record label.”
His company is a nod to his mom – Mama Boyz – and Peculiar is the first artist on the label.
His pal John P. Kee and his band, New Life, will join Turrentine at the show to celebrate the CD release.
Turrentine hopes the release of “My Reality” is the start of a great gospel career for himself and Peculiar.
“I hope to be the Jay-Z and P. Diddy of gospel,” he said.
As a radio DJ and singer, he’s already seen how his music and message can inspire. He hopes “My Reality” can continue to help those in need.
“This (album) is geared to encourage and inspire, and show people that what you see in Harold T. is someone who is no more special than you are,” he said. “If I can make it through, so can you.”
