TUPELO – There’s a healthy mix of new and old at this year’s GumTree Festival.
The arts festival welcomes artists, dancers and musicians to show off their best for the weekend of May 11-12.
“We have right at 100 exceptional artists. There are favorites from last year and there are some who are coming for the first time,” said Kit Stafford, director of the festival and the GumTree Museum of Art. “We have a wonderful variety, and it’ll be a treat for people who want to see something new.”
Artists who will be at this year’s GumTree Festival include Michael Banks, a former Best in Show winner, pottery artist Jan Carter and former Tupelo resident Tracey Davis, who creates intricate micro mosaics.
The festival kicks off at 7 p.m. May 10, with the GumBall at Goodlett Manor. There will be music by the Fabulous Steeler Band, a silent auction of art created by 2013 festival artists and food.
The festival begins at 9 a.m. Friday and 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
Stafford said the festival celebrates more than just the visual arts, so there are stages set up for dancers and musicians.
There will be performances by Tupelo Ballet and the Judy Ready Dance Studio, as well as sets by bands like The Pollies and Paper Blues.
There will also be kids’ activities, which will either be free or low cost, Stafford said.
“This is one of the finest traditions of Tupelo,” Stafford said. “It celebrates the arts in the community and how the community celebrates art. It’s remarkable it’s lasted 42 years; it’s stood the test of time.”
