Laurence Juber has enjoyed a career most guitarists can only dream about.
He was the lead guitarist for Paul McCartney’s Wings, played the theme for “The Spy Who Loved Me,” has scored two Grammy Awards and played guitar for numerous TV shows like “Home Improvement,” “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” “Roseanne” and “7th Heaven” and films like “The Muppet Movie,” “Good Will Hunting” and “Dirty Dancing.”
He just released a live CD/DVD combo and will release a new solo album this spring. His next show is at the Link Centre’s Monthly Music Mix on Friday.
“I describe what I do as borderline everything: folk, blues, jazz, even a little bit of classical, but with an overriding pop sensibility,” Juber said in a phone interview with the Daily Journal from his home in Los Angeles. “I’m always drawn to a good tune, a good melody. … I might get fairly adventurous, but it never gets completely out there. It’s always foot-tapping and has some kind of narrative and some kind of emotional context.”
It all comes, he said, from his passion for playing guitar, and he’s done that for nearly 50 years.
When he performs a solo gig, it’s just him and his guitar.
“It’s completely self-sufficient. I play the melody, I play the bass, all the rhythm parts and occasionally all of the drums at the same time. It’s really part of my artistic philosophy, that self-sufficiency,” Juber said. “I know how to make the music work and make the guitar work fit the music.”
Juber will celebrate his career and the 50th anniversary of the day he picked up a guitar this fall, when he’ll release a book full of photos he’s taken over the years.
“It’s kind of a banner year for me,” he said.
Right now, though, he’s focused on what he’ll perform in Tupelo.
He’ll mix in originals and borrow tunes from his friends, but he’s also inspired by Tupelo.
“Tupelo is a very special place, being Elvis’ birthplace,” he said, “so I’ll definitely do an Elvis tune.”
