TUPELO – There’s no business like show business, and that’s what the cast of “Kids on Broadway” is celebrating.
“Kids on Broadway,” presented by the Pied Piper Playhouse, is a song and dance revue
“My whole thought was taking songs from Broadway shows that had been sung by kids,” said director Debby Gibbs. “We picked from both old (shows) and new ones, and we found songs that really fit the youth mode.”
Selections include “Tomorrow” from “Annie,” “Circle of Life” from “The Lion King” and “We Go Together,” from “Grease.”
Gibbs also picked a few songs from popular TV musicals like “Camp Rock” and “High School Musical.”
The kids are divided by ages, so they’re singing age-appropriate songs, she said.
“I wanted something where they’d have a good time. ‘Circle of Life’ is probably the most serious song in the whole thing,” Gibbs said.
It’s also been educational for the cast.
“They’re not as familiar with some of the songs, and that makes a difference. Like with ‘Annie,’ they’d heard the song ‘Tomorrow’ but they didn’t know anything about ‘Hard Knock Life.’ They’ve had fun, but it’s been educational,” Gibbs said.
The performances will be followed by an ice cream social, a fundraiser for Pied Piper.
The fundraiser will help start a $500 scholarship for a senior in the North Mississippi area who has been a part of Pied Piper. The money will also help buy new props.
The next Pied Piper production will be a Christmas show, “The 12 Days of Christmas.”
