A beach isn’t nearby, and it’s not summer, but Papa Doo Run Run will bring the feeling of warm breezes and the roar of the ocean to Tupelo tonight.
The band, made up of Bobby “G” Gothar, Jim Rush, Jeffrey Foskett, Adrian Baker, Bo Fox and Don Zirilli, got its start in the ’60s and gained notoriety for channeling the laid-back surf sound and perfect harmonies of The Beach Boys. In fact, all of the members have played with various versions of The Beach Boys over the years.
Today, Papa Doo Run Run keeps that classic rock sound going and brings its beach party-esque live show to nearly 100 cities a year.
“Maybe about half of what we do is Beach Boys (music). We do the hits, the stuff everybody wants to sing along to,” Zirilli said in a phone interview with the Daily Journal from his home in, where else, California. “The other half is classic rock from the ‘60s and ‘70s. It’s a beach party. Everybody leaves feeling great.”
In addition to The Beach Boys, the guys of Papa Doo Run Run have also performed with Frankie Valli, Merle Haggard and Jimmy Buffett.
Papa Doo Run Run’s show is a part of the Tupelo Concert Association’s 2012-2013 season.
Music lovers who like to sing along with classics will enjoy the show, Zirilli said.
“We try to make people forget about everything else going on. The music we do is very, very memory-jogging. You’re gonna remember being in the back seat of a Buick after the prom,” he said.
Zirilli said the group is excited about coming to Tupelo and hopes to meet fans at the show.
“We’re coming a day early just to see (Elvis Presley’s) birthplace, so we’ll do that on our day off,” he said. “Everyone’s invited to come see us. We’re looking forward to it.”
