Quote along with ‘Christmas Vacation’

No Christmas is perfect, and the Griswold family Christmas was no exception.
The Link Centre is inviting fans of the 1989 holiday classic, “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” to a quote-along of the film next week, complete with a make-your-own hot chocolate bar, egg nog and a tacky holiday sweater contest.
“There’s always that one person that says they don’t like ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ or ‘A Christmas Story,’ but I’ve never heard anyone say they didn’t like ‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,’” said Derek Russell, director of operations at the Link Centre, “so this was an easy choice for a second quote-along.”
The screening is a part of the Link Centre’s new Words with Films series, which kicked off in October with a quote-along of “Ghostbusters,” followed with a live-read of “The Princess Bride” script in November.
With the quote-along screenings, the film’s most famous lines flash on the screen when the character says them, so the audience can talk along with the movie. The audience will be able to quote the movie’s most famous dialogue along with Clark, Eddie, Aunt Bethany and the rest of the cast.
“It’s like group karaoke,” Russell said.
For the “Ghostbusters” quote-along, Russell found an Ecto-1 replica car from the movie to add to the fun. He’s hoping to find an old RV to help promote the “Christmas Vacation” quote-along.
The Words with Films series will continue in 2013.
“We had great turn-outs with both the ‘Ghostbusters’ quote-along and the live-read, so we’re working on a schedule for 2013 right now. February will see a Valentine’s Day dinner and quote-along of ‘Casablanca,’” Russell said.
The next script live-read, to take place in March, will be either “Clue” or “The Breakfast Club.”
But for now, Russell’s busy planning a memorable evening for “Christmas Vacation” fans. There’ll be a variety of ways to make hot chocolate, and there’s a special movie-related grand prize for the person wearing the best tacky Christmas sweater.
After all, he said, “the most enjoying traditions of the seasons are best enjoyed in the warm embrace with kith and kin.”
