Surviving Allison to perform at BBQ Duel

TUPELO – Folk, metal, country, pop and everything in between: That’s Surviving Allison.

All of the band’s members – Preston George, Chris Ekiss, Drew Gann, Andrew Ferrell and Zach Jones – all have different influences and sounds, but all of those sounds converge for something unique.

“Everybody in this band grew up listening to different stuff,” Jones said.

“We still do,” Ekiss added.

Those opposing styles make things interesting, the guys said.

“It makes it fun and it makes it new and different,” Ekiss said.

Surviving Allison, based out of Corinth, has been around since 2011, but the most current line-up has been playing gigs across the region for the past seven months.

The band released an EP in February and has plans to record a full-length record later this year.

But the stage is where the band thrives.

“There’s nothing like the joy of performing on stage, and people enjoying us on stage,” Gann said.

The guys try to put on the most entertaining live show they can.

“If you’re gonna pay to see us, we’re gonna put on a show,” Ekiss said.

A Surviving Allison set includes originals and a few fun covers thrown in.

“We’ll mix it up. We’ll do ‘You & I’ by Lady Gaga – with a banjo. Then we’ll do ‘In the Air Tonight’ by Phil Collins – with a banjo,” Ferrell said.

Surviving Allison hopes to spend 2013 expanding its horizons.

“Mississippi and Tennessee have been great to us, but it’s time to branch out,” Ekiss said.

The band invites fans of all styles of music to check out their set at the Don’t Be Cruel BBQ Duel this weekend.

“People come to see other bands and leave wanting more of us. They’ll leave with a handful of our merch and we’ll have 100 more likes on Facebook,” Ekiss said. “If you’ve never heard of us, we’re something worth checking out.”
