TUPELO – The Tupelo Film Commission has big plans for movie fans.
A bonanza of silver screen opportunities is on the way. It starts at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday with a screening of Elvis Presley’s “The Trouble with Girls” at the Lyric Theatre. Tickets are $5.
It’s a comedy, a musical, a mystery and a farce, and Elvis’ co-star, Marlyn Mason, will attend.
“She’s absolutely wonderful,” said Pat Rasberry, film commissioner. “She’ll be signing autographs and answering questions from fans.”
Next, you can catch “Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation.” It’s a shot-for-shot remake of “Raiders” that was filmed by a collection of Mississippi kids in the 1980s.
The movie’s already made the rounds in Hollywood, and the Village Voice called it “nothing short of slapdash spectacular.” According to Wired Magazine, it is “the greatest fan film yet made.”
“Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation.” will come to Tupelo’s Fairpark at 8 p.m. Aug. 26. There’s no admission.
Chris Strompolos, who plays Indiana Jones, will speak with students at Tupelo High School on Aug. 27.
In addition, he’ll meet with the public from 9 to noon on Aug. 28 at Link Centre’s Black Box Theatre.
“Chris is considering coming back to Mississippi to do another film,” Rasberry said. “He’s interested in meeting with our independent filmmakers to see what’s possible.”
And the movies will keep coming to Tupelo:
n “To Kill a Mockingbird,” 8 p.m., Sept. 16, Fairpark. Free.
n “Peter and the Wolf,” 8 p.m. Sept. 17, Ballard Park. Free.
n “Dive,” 6:30 p.m. Sept. 23, Link Centre’s Black Box Theatre. $5.
n “Manhattan Short Film Festival,” 6:30 p.m. Sept. 30, Malco Theatre. $6. (Audience members will help judge winners of a worldwide contest.)
n “Wizard of Oz,” 7:30 p.m. Oct. 7, Fairpark. Free.
n “Pelada,” 6:30 p.m. Oct. 21, Link Centre’s Black Box Theatre. $5.
n “Burning in the Sun,” 6:30 p.m. Nov. 11, Link Centre’s Black Box Theatre. $5.
Rest assured that the schedule of events goes well into 2011. More films, as well as workshops, are planned for a variety of venues.
“It’s an exciting year. It really is,” Rasberry said. “We’ve got a great lineup and a lot of diversity. We’re trying to have something to interest everybody.”
