Fulton singer-songwriter to release debut album

Wes Sheffield’s new album got its start with a friendship between two Northeast Mississippi guys nearly 2,000 miles from home.
Sheffield, a Fulton native, became friends with Tupelo musician Adam Grace, a member of the rock band Truth & Salvage Co., when the two were living out in Los Angeles. Grace’s band stayed on the road a lot, and after Sheffield moved back to the hill country, he caught a Truth & Salvage Co. show at the Blue Canoe.
“I hadn’t seen him in a long time, and I sent him a demo of a few songs,” Sheffield said. “He called me a few days later and said, ‘Hey man, let’s do a record.’”
With Grace at the helm, Sheffield recorded his debut solo record, “Fever,” in a Nashville studio in September.
“We had 10 songs to do in 10 days, and a lot of bands, when they do a record, have played those songs for a long time. But my band had none of that,” he said. The learn-as-you-go method worked for the band, though, and “Fever” is ready for a release.
Sheffield will play a CD release party at Romie’s BBQ on Friday with his band, made up of drummer Justin Enlow, Mark Willcutt on percussion and keys, guitarist Luke Johnson, bassist Caleb Guth and vocalist Candice Pitts.
Sheffield is proud of “Fever.”
“We recorded it on tape. We wanted to keep that old analog sound. I wanted it to sound warm,” he said.
That warm sound complements his bluesy rock sound, influenced by Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles.
There’ll be a listening party after the show, and “Fever” officially releases Nov. 20.
Sheffield’s itching to get back into the studio, though.
“I’m ready to do another. I had a good time,” he said.
Still, Sheffield said he’s a live musician at heart. He’s ready to play the tunes off of “Fever” live.
“In the studio you can play, in the kid sense. I like playing with different amps and mic positions. You can create these sound paintings,” he said. “But by the time the record was done, I was so ready to play a live show. I’m ready to play and get some support.”
