TUPELO – Though German expressionist Hans Friedrich Grohs died in 1981, he lives on in the art he left behind.
A collection of his paintings are on display at the Gumtree Museum of Art. An opening reception is planned for tonight, and Grohs’ daughter and granddaughter will be in attendance.
The exhibit, titled “The Glow of Faith,” is a 38-piece collection of paintings and drawings inspired by Grohs’ 1967 trip to visit Norway’s fjords. Some are in watercolor and some are in pen and ink.
“They’re very sophisticated,” said museum director Kit Stafford. “A lot of the pieces are smaller; they’re like small treasures. They are smaller pieces, but they are intricate and detailed.”
Though Grohs lived in such a turbulent country during both World Wars, he managed to continue to express himself creatively through his artwork.
Landscapes were a major theme for Grohs. The pieces in “The Glow of Faith” reflect Grohs’ reverence for nature and his faith in God.
“He found peace and serenity and his spirituality in nature, and that’s reflected in his work, and that’s where the ‘Glow of Faith’ comes from,” Stafford said. “The pen and inks are beautiful, and the watercolors are very glowy.”
“The Glow of Faith” is on loan to the museum from the Mississippi Museum of Art.
The exhibit will be at Gumtree until Aug. 26, and will be a part of the museum’s Saturday at the Museum, a program for elementary school students, on Aug. 20.
