TUPELO – Chonda Pierce finds the funny in everything – even if she’s got a flat.
“I blew a tire, so I’m at the car place getting it fixed,” she said in a phone interview with the Daily Journal. “It’s OK – I need the material.”
Christian comedienne Pierce finds just about everything funny – “As long as there’s no blood involved, anything can be funny,” she said – which helped win her millions of fans.
Her new tour, “Girl Talk,” is custom made for ladies.
“My audience has always leaned toward the female audience. As I say, a little Christian male bashing never hurt anybody,” she said, laughing. “Comedy is about what you’re familiar with.”
Pierce draws on her life and the world when she’s getting ready for a show.
“I open the newspapers every morning and see what’s going on,” she said.
The “Girl Talk” tour is set up like a talk show.
“I can’t do (Dave) Letterman’s Top 10 – I get bored at six or 7 – so we do Chonda’s Top 5,” she said. “It’s like Ellen meets Letterman meets a stand-up comedian.”
It’s not entirely a ladies’ night: Christian singer Geoff Moore is Pierce’s special guest for this tour.
“I think it’s hilarious when you take these singers along with you,” she said. “It’s like (singers) know what’s gonna happen and they have the next song planned, and I don’t. My favorite thing is throwing these guys off. It’s so stinkin’ funny.”
This summer, Pierce will record a new DVD at the Ryman in Nashville and then go on a comedy cruise called the Laugh Boat.
But for now, she’s excited to embark on her “Girl Talk” tour.
“We’re in such a place economically and spiritually where we just need a good laugh,” she said. “Life is serious enough, so let’s laugh together and talk. That’s where we got the ‘Girl Talk’ idea from. We have lots to say, so better get there early.”
