Glorious Gospel: Diverse performers gather for Link Centre show

By Sheena Barnett/NEMS Daily Journal

Gospel comes in all styles, all colors, all sounds.
This month’s Music Mix concert at the Link Centre celebrates all styles of gospel music. North Mississippi musicians, soloists, choirs and clergymen will share their sounds at the concert on Sunday.
One of those groups is The Three Tenors of Plantersville.
The original line up was Noble Shumpert, Shelton Shannon and Steve Shumpert, singers who’ve perfected their craft for years before forming the trio 10 years ago. Following Noble Shumpert’s death last year, Shelton and Steve Shumpert knew they needed to carry on the work they’d started.
“We were encouraged by people in the community to keep the group going,” Shannon said. “We prayed and asked the Lord to send us someone, and he sent us Fred.”
Fredrick Suggs is a “perfect match” for the group, Shannon said, and he joined in February.
The new addition to the group is a new chapter for the men, each of whom have been singing for decades.
“We go from church to church,” Shannon said.
The group plans to make an album in the coming months.
At the Monthly Music Mix show, The Three Tenors will perform songs like “I’m Redeemed,” “Oh, How I Love Jesus” and “It’s Been a Mighty Good Day.” They’ll also lead the other performers and audience in the closing number, “I’ll Fly Away.”
Another of those performers is Shannon’s mother, Lavada Shelton, who’ll perform long meter, or “Dr. Watts,” hymns.
The songs are sung in a slow style, with each line being sung by one singer before it’s sung together by the congregation.
The Unity Choir is the new Diversity Choir, bringing together singers of different backgrounds and denominations.
The Rev. Lee Howell has taught in public schools in Oxford, Tupelo and Holly Springs for more than 30 years, and has played all over the world.
