TUPELO – Buddy and Kim Summer didn’t get to ride their Gold Wing motorcycle from South Carolina to Northeast Mississippi.
Who could blame them?
“It was pouring down rain all the way,” Buddy Summer said Thursday during a block party sponsored by Honda of Tupelo. “We’ll leave home and get caught in the rain, but we won’t leave in the rain.”
Instead, the Summers and some friends rode in a truck to take part in a rally organized by the Mississippi District of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association.
“Wouldn’t miss it for the world,” Summers said.
Gregg Harbison, Mississippi District director, said about 600 GWRRA members registered for the event, which will continue today and Saturday in Tupelo.
“Most of the time, people will be at the rally at the BancorpSouth Arena,” Harbison said. “But when the sun comes out, there will be motorcycles everywhere. They’re going to be visiting all the sites and attractions you have in Tupelo.”
Lamar and Cheryl Megginson wore their rain gear and pulled a trailer behind their Gold Wing on the road from Alabaster, Ala., on Thursday.
“Cheryl’s shopping cart is what I call it,” Lamar Megginson said of the trailer.
She drove a Harley-Davidson before meeting her husband.
“The day she rode a Gold Wing, she got rid of the Harley,” Lamar Megginson said.
“I sold it to my daughter and son-in-law,” she said.
“You stuck your son-in-law with it is what you mean,” he said.
They were among a crowd of Gold Wing fans who showed up for the block party on Daybrite Drive.
William Warren and Bob Langley, both with Thunderheart Ministries in Starkville, manned the grill, cooking up free hamburgers and hot-dogs.
“I’m watching, really,” Warren said with a grin. “He tells me not to do anything unless he tells me to.”
“That’s right,” Langley said.
‘Asked for it’
Lemuel and Jane Jones of McCall Creek had a mission. Harbison had asked them to dress up, so she wore overalls and a bright green, oversized foam hat with matching shoelaces on her shoes. He had the overalls with bright red hat and shoelaces, plus a bushy, fake mustache.
“He told us to dress up,” Lemuel Jones said. “When he looked at me, he shook his head. I said, ‘You asked for it.’”
Berton Bowden of Tupelo didn’t have to go far to join the fun.
“We get to see them coming here,” he said. “It’s good to have them.”
And there’s room for more. Day passes will be available for $10 today and Saturday, and they’ll be good from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the BancorpSouth Arena.
“Everybody that has come to the rally has been excited about the facilities and they’ve so appreciated how they’ve been treated,” Harbison said. “Everybody’s had a smile on their face, and everybody’s said, ‘Welcome.’”
