Lane Chapel Quintet celebrates first ‘Greatest Hits’ CD

By Sheena Barnett/NEMS Daily Journal

After 36 years together, the Lane Chapel Quintet’s first-ever “Greatest Hits” CD is a bit overdue.
The Tupelo-based gospel quintet – made up of Gregory Henderson, Rufus Lauderdale, Emmitt Foster, Rob Barnes and Wayne Hereford – has had a successful nearly 40 years together, and finally this year the group decided to release its first “Greatest Hits” collection.
“Greatest hits (collections) mean a lot,” said member Rob Barnes. “We’re keeping that legacy that Charles Richardson started alive.”
It was easy to pick the songs for the CD: the members chose their most-requested songs.
“‘Peace in the Valley’ is a favorite request,” he said. “There’s also ‘Seek, Seek.’”
The album is just one part of the quintet’s busy 2012.
Later this year the group will ride up and down the Mississippi on the American Queen as a part of a cruise. The guys will perform as A Touch of Harmony and will perform secular songs, like favorite R&B and doo wop songs by acts like the Temptations, The Four Tops and the Chi-Lites.
“We’re the main group for the cruise,” Barnes said. “We’ll be doing two shows a day.”
The band also has a steady roster of gigs lined up through the rest of the year.
In addition, the Lane Chapel Quintet is up for a 2013 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Arts.
Past recipients include B.B. King, James “Super Chikan” Johnson and Charles Burnett.
“It’s the highest honor you can get from Mississippi for the arts,” Barnes said.
These milestones are just another chapter in the Lane Chapel history, one Barnes calls “overwhelming” to consider in quartet history.
“It’s a great legacy,” he said. “It’s a great story.”
