Laughs a plenty in Corinth Theatre-Arts comedy

If the Sycamores are crazy, the rest of the world is a bit crazier. Two young lovers must overcome their families, both a little off in very different ways, in the comedy “You Can’t Take It With You,” produced by Corinth Theatre-Arts.
At the heart of the play are Alice Sycamore (Leah Petty) and Tony Kirby (Jon Hudson). The Kirbys are a rich but unhappy family, but the Sycamores have their own issues.
“Her mom writes plays and is very, very bad at it. Her sister dances, but is very, very bad at it,” Petty said with a laugh. Don’t forget her fireworks-loving father and kind-hearted grandfather, who invites snakes and strangers to live with the family.
“Alice’s family is exploring everything that brings them joy in life,” said director Cristina Skinner. “And Tony wants to experience that same joy.”
“He follows (Alice) around like a sick puppy dog, and it’s a big mess,” Hudson said.
When Alice and Tony arrange for their families to meet, chaos ensues. The uptight Kirbys are shocked by the Sycamores’ artistic, eccentric lifestyles.
Alice’s grandpa (Randy Duke) insists the couple is meant to be, despite their families’ differences.
“He’s a little more serious, but he likes to make snide remarks,” Duke said. “He’s sort of a philosopher.”
CTA just produced a comedy, “Rumors,” but Skinner said “You Can’t Take It With You” features more verbal wit than the slapstick in “Rumors.”
“It’s about how they come to terms with extreme lifestyles,” Skinner said. “It’s sort of like improv, where we shove these characters together and let them react to each another.”
