Looking back at 2010’s winners and losers

By M. Scott Morris/NEMS Daily Journal

Let’s start on a sour note with a look back at the worst movies Screen Scene reviewed for 2010.
But don’t worry, it’s sure to get better before we’re done.
Wizard 106.7’s Kelli Karlson’s three losers for 2010 were “Piranha 3D,” “Saw 3D” and “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.”
She was expecting a “Snakes on the Plane” experience with “Piranha,” hoping it would be so bad that it was good. Nope – this one was just bad.
Karlson saw no point in subjecting herself to the psychological pain of “Saw 3D,” where a crazy man tortured people to prove various “ethical” points.
And “Scott Pilgrim” was plain boring.
“I did get a good nap,” she said. “I slept. It was great.”
Karlson and I actually agreed on “Saw 3D” and “Piranha 3D.”
After the first two bloody minutes of “Saw 3D,” I knew I was not, and never would be, the target audience for that mess.
I would’ve given “Piranha” an F, but it had a cameo from Christopher Lloyd of “Taxi” and “Back to the Future” fame, so I elevated it to a D minus.
I also gave a D minus to the remake of “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” If you can’t kill the bad guy, what’s the point of all the predictable fuss and worry on screen?

The upside
Now, we’ll take a more positive view of 2010’s offerings.
Karlson’s list includes the Steve Carell/Tina Fey pairing in “Date Night.” She called it funny, but not family friendly.
Ben Affleck’s “The Town” had Karlson guessing until the end. And right from the start, she was hooked on the heroics of Denzel Washington and Chris Pine as they tried to stop a runaway locomotive in “Unstoppable.”
My top three include “Toy Story 3,” an animated feature that had about everything you would want out of a movie: comedy, drama, action and more.
I also was a big fan of “Get Low,” a Southern mystery of the heart with Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek and Bill Murray. Find this film on DVD because you probably missed it during the split second it spent at theaters.
And the world would be out of whack if Karlson and I didn’t have at least one major disagreement. I consider “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” among the year’s best.
Unlike “Get Low,” I don’t think “Scott Pilgrim” is for everybody, but I’m a big fan of this oddball film based on a comic book series.
There you have it, the best and worst as we found them in 2010. Come back next week, when we start compiling our lists for 2011.
