Anyone who watches “The Social Network” should feel a little dirty the next time they go on Facebook.
True, the story of the founding of the premier social networking site has been dramatized for your enjoyment, so you can’t take it as the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
On the other side, cut-throat business tactics haven’t been this fun since the original “Wall Street.”
Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) is a computer genius at Harvard, where geniuses are commonplace. After he gets dumped by his girlfriend, he creates a website that generates enough traffic to shut down Harvard’s network.
The prank earns him six months of academic probation and brings him to the attention of Cameron Winklevoss (Armie Hammer) and Tyler Winklevoss (Josh Pence). The twins have an idea for a social networking site, and they enlist Mark’s computer skills.
But Mark spends all of his time working on a rival site, known as The Facebook in its early days. With help from his friend, Eduardo (Andrew Garfield), Mark’s site takes over Harvard on the way to taking over the world.
As Facebook’s popularity grows, Sean Parker (Justin Timberlake), the founder of Napster.com, connects with Mark. Sean and Mark’s relationship begins to cause problems for Eduardo, who provided all of the start-up money for Facebook.
The story keeps flashing back and forth from depositions for a pair of lawsuits: One filed by the Winklevoss twins and another filed by Eduardo. It’s an ingenious storytelling device that never gets old.
Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin makes the dialogue sing, and the movie is based on the book, “The Accidental Billionaires,” by Ben Mezrich.
Again, truth might be a slippery thing in “The Social Network,” but it makes for a dramatic and entertaining time at the theater.
I give “The Social Network” an A.
