Music, games, food and more at GumTree Museum of Art fundraiser

An upcoming holiday and a good cause are two perfect reasons to party. That’s the idea between the It’s Almost New Year’s Party, set for next weekend at the J.J. Rogers building in Tupelo. Hosted by Scott Reed’s band, 2 Drink Minimum, the party will feature music by the band, food and drinks by Park Heights and games. All proceeds go to the GumTree Museum of Art.
“We heard the museum was having a real financial crunch,” Reed said. “There’s a significant, immediate need.”
Reed called Greg Pirkle, who owns the old J.J. Rogers building in Tupelo. The space dates back to the early 1900s, and is now open for weddings, parties and other events. When Reed took a tour, he saw the perfect space for his band to set up, for a bar and for games like shuffleboard and horse shoes. He booked the building, called on Park Heights owner Blair Hughes and event coordinator Elizabeth Anderson, and the party was planned.
“We were overwhelmed by the generosity of these great people involved,” said Kit Stafford, director of the GumTree Museum. “That they were willing to go to bat for us is proof, to me, that Tupelo is a great place to live.”
Stafford said many organizations and businesses are hurting for extra funds, and the museum is in that same boat.
“We know we are not alone in that battle,” she said. “We feel for all non-profits.”
The $25 ticket price includes the food, music, games, and, of course, two drinks.
“We think you should have some before you hear us, and we should have some before we play,” Reed joked.
The finger foods, Anderson said, will have a Southern flair, including mini sandwiches, cheeses, sweets and cured meats.
2 Drink Minimum includes Reed, Todd Hunt, Moe Livingston, Denny Ray Nolan, Chuck McArthur, Tim Hester, Harris Magruder and Lynn Darling, and the night of the party will also include a few surprise guests.
“It’s a group of really talented musicians, and we have 30 years of playing between us,” he said.
Reed said he hopes the community comes together to have fun at the It’s Almost New Year’s Party – which he calls the “party of the year” – but most importantly, that the GumTree Museum of Art is saved.
“In February we’ll celebrate 28 years, and the Gumtree Festival is 42 years old,” Stafford said. “We really are a part of what defines Tupelo. We want to keep offering great services to our community.”
