Music, panels at Oxford Blues Festival

OXFORD – Blues fans can dig a little deeper into their favorite genre at the Oxford Blues Festival.
In addition to performances by the likes of Big George Brock, Ellmore Williams, Reba Russell and the legendary Johnny Winter, the festival also includes panels about blues music, musicians and tourism.
“We want (the festival) to be fun and interesting,” said festival organizer Darryl Parker.
The festival kicks off Thursday, July 18, with Winter’s concert.
“He’s never played Oxford,” Parker said. “He’s so busy, so I’m psyched we could get him.”
The blues panels begin the festival on July 19.
The blues tourism panel is at noon, followed by the blues scholars panel at 1:15 p.m. A panel of blues musicians wrap things up at 2:30 p.m.
At 4:15 p.m. that afternoon, the Anthony “Big A” Sherrod Trio kicks off the music. David Evans performs, followed by Alphonso Sanders and Big George Brock. More music will be rocking the Oxford Square after those shows.
Zach Tilotson and Cameran Kimbrough Duo start the outdoor music at 1 p.m. July 20.
The Reviews, Silas Reed & Da Books, Adam Gussow and Shine Turner will also perform, as will J.J. Callier & the Zydeco Knockouts.
Ellmore Williams, Hezekiah Earley and Little Pootchie will open up for Reba Russell’s band, who’ll take the stage at 7:15 p.m. July 20.
“There’s a mix of different styles of the blues. There’s something for everyone, from little kids to grandma,” Parker said.
Barbecue will be served at those shows, too.
Coolers, lawn chairs and blankets are allowed.
“That’s part of why I started this festival: I wanted people to have a good time,” Parker said. “It’s a reason to celebrate. It’s gonna be a good time for families.”
