Now that’s early: One woman booked and paid for her wedding reception two years in advance, according to Martha Jenkins, co-owner of Guy’s Catering in Tupelo.
– Save us a slice: Be prepared for sticker shock if you come in with magazine photos of some fancy cakes. The elaborate wedding confections shown are available … for a price, Jenkins said. She checked on one tiny magazine photo. The bride didn’t realize the cake’s scale: It was a 14-foot cake originally made for a prince and encrusted with tiny handmade flowers. The cost was $10,000. The shocked bride declined to order such a cake.
Another popular cake shown in magazines is designed by Sylvia Weinstock. Large paper-thin sugar flowers cascade down the cake and give it a fragile beauty. It can be made and flown to Tupelo, but the cost is in the multiple thousands of dollars, Jenkins said.
