BOONEVILLE – Since opening in March, Booneville’s Halfway Home Animal Shelter has been busy adopting out dogs and cats and setting up its nonprofit status, but now it’s time for a little fundraising.

The shelter is hosting Paws for a Music Break, a concert that will feature a variety of music, with all of the proceeds going to the shelter.

“We’re really hoping it turns out to be a great night,” said Anne Marie Ford, who works at the shelter. “It’s our major fundraiser for the year.”

The shelter’s volunteers hit the ground running after creating the shelter in March. They’ve found new homes for the city’s critters, as well as completed all of the necessary paperwork to establish itself as the city’s only no-kill shelter.

“Since March we have adopted out a little over 200 dogs and puppies and 70 cats and kittens,” Ford said. “We’ve united about 40 dogs with their owners.”

Halfway Home Animal Shelter can take in animals only within the city limits, but Ford helps folks from the county find homes for their animals, too. She offers tips on how to take a cute photo of the animal and posts its information online.

Ford hopes animal lovers and music fans enjoy Paws for a Music Break.

Tony Bain will perform with the Dale Michael Band, who’ll offer up classic rock hits. Jackie Blassingame will perform, too.

The headlining act is Breaking Grass, a North Mississippi bluegrass band that just signed to Mountain Fever Records. The five-piece group just released its first album on that label, “Just as Strong.”

Chances will be sold on a guitar signed by all of performers, and there will be a dance floor so the audience can strut its stuff.

“We’re hoping it’ll be a fun night,” Ford said, “and we hope everyone will attend.”
