TUPELO – It’s time to think pink.

Komen North Mississippi Race for the Cure will kick off its annual effort to fight breast cancer today during the final Down on Main concert tonight at Fair Park.

“We are excited about the upcoming race,” said Cindy Hale, north Mississippi affiliate coordinator. “We just want to help our team captains get started on the right foot.”

The free concert featuring The Como Mamas, Afrissippi and Galactic begins at 6:30 p.m. The Race for the Cure tent will be staffed at 6 p.m.

The annual 5k run/walk on Oct. 26 raises money to provide mammograms to the medically underserved and community education programs in a 15-county region. The race begins at Fairpark and winds through downtown neighborhoods before returning to the downtown park.

Team sign up packets will be available tonight at the Down on Main event. Individuals and teams can sign up online at komennorthms.org. Race entry is $20; chip timing is an additional $5 through Oct. 18.

On Saturday, Girl Scouts and volunteers will be passing out flyers along the Race for the Cure route in an effort to “pink the streets” ahead of the event. Anyone interested in decorating for Breast Cancer Awareness month can purchase a sign for $25 and ribbons for $15. Order forms are available at the komennorthms.org site.
