Members of Tupelo Middle School’s show choir, Splash, are ready for the season.
The group’s spring show is titled “Rain or Shine,” so they’re prepared for whatever spring has to offer.
“The first half of the show is rain songs, and the second half is shine songs,” said Katie Foxworthy, who directs Splash with Danielle Frerer.
The rain songs include “No Rain,” “Umbrella” and “Ain’t No Sunshine,” and for the opposite extreme, you’ll hear “Hear Comes the Sun,” “Blue Skies” and “Pocketful of Sunshine.”
If you’re not up to speed on show choir, it combines singing with choreography. The television series, “Glee,” features an amped-up version of show choir.
Foxworthy said Splash took inspiration from the series for “Rain or Shine’s” closing number, “Walking on Sunshine/Halo.”
“It comes from a girls sing-off from ‘Glee,’” Foxworthy said. “That’s kind of fun.”
Putting in the time
With help from several outside choreographers, the 45 Splash members have been preparing their high-energy show since January. Show choir is an after-school activity at TMS, and no school credit is offered.
“They practice two to three days a week,” Foxworthy said. “It’s Mondays and Fridays, mostly, but sometimes on Saturdays to work with choreographers.
“These seventh- and eighth-graders amaze me with what they can do and what they can pull together in a short amount of time.”
Some members of the show choir hope to continue when they reach Tupelo High School, but others may follow other interests.
“Whatever happens, I hope they remember the fun they had at Splash and their crazy music teachers,” Foxworthy said.
For now, there’s a show to put on and people to entertain.
“If they want to see a talented, energetic group of kids, this is a great show to see,” Foxworthy said. “We have a lot of good kids, and they’ve really worked hard.”
