Books and tapes

Dot Kelly of Century Financial Services in Mississippi, Tupelo office, recommended these books. Village Book Store confirmed the books are still in print:

Banks

Most banks offer free pamphlets of tips for consumers. Trustmark National Bank, for example, has four new brochures free for the asking, including three on credit and one titled “Budget and Save.” For copies, stop by any of the seven Northeast Mississippi Trustmark branches or call 841-2983 to get one by mail.

Banks also offer in-person advice from experts. Their financial planners can offer free or low-cost guidance on ways to invest savings.

Extension Service

The Mississippi Cooperative Extension Service also has free brochures, including “What to Do with What You’ve Got: Take Charge of Your Money,” “Financial Planning for Retirement” and “Family Financial Package: Investment Guidelines for Saving.” Another booklet in the Family Financial Package series, “Investment Guidelines for Financial Planning” explains in detail the various types of government securities (such as Series EE savings bonds), mortgage securities, state/municipal bonds, Zero-coupon bonds, investment companies, money market funds, annuities and more. Stop by the MCES office in your county for details; the Tupelo office is at 5338 Cliff Gookin Boulevard.

Analysis and advice

Consumer Credit Counseling Service offers a financial lifeline free of charge. Experts help people create budgets, find ways to reduce debt and begin saving money for goals. For details, call or write the Tupelo office of CCCS at 1018 N. Gloster, Suite H, Tupelo, MS 38801; telephone, 680-9750.

Financial planners, consultants and advisors also can offer guidance for varying fees. Check in the telephone directory for experts who can help.
