Books and tapes

Most banks offer free pamphlets of tips for consumers. Trustmark National Bank, for example, has four new brochures free for the asking, including three on credit and one titled “Budget and Save.” For copies, stop by any of the seven Northeast Mississippi Trustmark branches or call 841-2983 to get one by mail.

Banks also offer in-person advice from experts. Their financial planners can offer free or low-cost guidance on ways to invest savings.

Extension Service

The Mississippi Cooperative Extension Service also has free brochures, including “What to Do with What You’ve Got: Take Charge of Your Money,” “Financial Planning for Retirement” and “Family Financial Package: Investment Guidelines for Saving.” Another booklet in the Family Financial Package series, “Investment Guidelines for Financial Planning” explains in detail the various types of government securities (such as Series EE savings bonds), mortgage securities, state/municipal bonds, Zero-coupon bonds, investment companies, money market funds, annuities and more.
