TUPELO – The First Baptist Church of Tupelo is celebrating Easter with a run/walk – a nod to the events at the Resurrection.
“The disciples ran from the grave, saying, ‘He is not here; he is risen,’” said Lee Allred, assistant pastor of serving and support at First Baptist Church.
The second annual 5K Resurrection Run/Walk is set for Saturday, April 7, at 8:30 a.m. at Robins Field, followed by a one-mile fun run/walk at 8:35 a.m.
“The 5K will go all through downtown Tupelo, around Front Street, back up Jefferson, near Milam, up north on to Robins Street, around that historic neighborhood, and then back to Robins Field,” Allred said. “We’ve had about 275 runners sign up already.”
A community party, complete with an Easter egg hunt with 12,000 Easter eggs, will take place at Robins Field after the race at about 10 a.m.
Besides the egg hunt, there will also be a petting zoo, inflatables and other kids’ events and games.
A helicopter will land at about 7:45 a.m. and will stay on site throughout the party.
Up next is a community barbecue at 11 a.m.
Both the community party and barbecue are free.
“If you’re a runner, you can get the run in early and then bring your kids to the party,” Allred said.
The weekend rounds out with a Resurrection Sunrise Service at 7 a.m. Sunday at Robins Field.
Allred said everyone is welcome to Robins Field for the church’s events.
“We just hope the community will come and be a part of it,” he said. “It’s gonna be a great day.”
