SHEENA BARNETT: It's Album Club's first birthday

It can only get better from here. Last month, we had the best Album Club meeting since I started the group a year ago.
We listened to The Velvet Underground’s debut record, enjoyed cheesecake and spicy nuts and had a blast.
New member Spencer Pleasants brought books and other music related to the record, which added a new dimension to the music.
We debated what some songs were about and how some instruments were used, discussed the influence of drugs on the music and talked about how the record has held up over the years.
In other words, it was the Album Club meeting I’d always dreamed it could be.
It has been a roller coaster ride since I formed the club last April.
Some meetings were similar to last month’s, just not as enthusiastic. Some meetings, it was just me and one other person.
But, finally, we hit our stride, and it was so much fun. I had a blast listening to music and talking about it with the awesome folks who showed up.
You know what was missing? You.
This month, we’re listening to “Diamond Dogs” by David Bowie. Pleasants brought some Bowie to last month’s meeting, and we liked it so well we decided to give the legend a listen.
Since it’s our one-year anniversary, we’re having cake at tonight’s meeting.
We’re getting together today at 6 p.m. at the Link Centre.
We have a ton of ideas for future Album Club meetings, from including live performances to attending operas to watching musicals.
We’re just getting started.
It can only get better from here.
