The South will come alive in song on Friday night at the Link Centre. Southern songwriters Tricia Walker, Davis Raines, Bob Ray and Clint Jordan will share songs and stories at the Monthly Mix on Friday night.
“This format is more impromptu,” Walker said in a phone interview with the Journal. “We can feed off what the other performers and writers are doing.”
The in-the-round set-up is a favorite of Walker’s.
“There’s a living room kind of feel, and we can enjoy sharing where the stories come from,” she said. “There’s a very communicative feel.”
Walker, a Mississippi native and Nashville resident, helped found the original “Women in the Round” songwriter group that included Pam Tillis, Karen Staley and Ashley Cleveland.
Walker has worked with artists like Connie Smith, Shania Twain, Paul Overstreet and Russ Taff, and her music has been recorded by Faith Hill, Alison Krauss and Patty Loveless.
These days, Walker is helping budding musicians at Delta State University, her alma mater.
She works at the university’s Delta Music Institute, which gives students a hands-on experience running a record label, recording music and learning about the biz.
“It’s not the same record model from a few years ago,” she said. “Everything is taught with a real entrepreneurial mindset.”
Walker recorded her last album at Delta State, and plans to record a new album there this summer.
“I have the concept; I just have to find the time,” she said. “I might play one or two new things at the (Tupelo) concert.”
