‘Sunsational’ Success

Salad lovers were in for a treat Tuesday at “Sunsational Salads,” a fundraiser for Project Hope in Tupelo.
For $5, patrons were offered 25 different salads – including ones featuring tuna, chicken, fruit, pasta, grapes, broccoli, carrots and cucumbers – plus a drink and cookie, at the North Mississippi Medical Center Wellness Center.
“We wanted a wide variety, not just leafy green salads,” said Genie Alice Via, the “Green Street Gang” team captain for Project Hope. “We wanted some with meat so the guys would come. We ended up with a pretty good variety, which is what we were hoping for.”
Project Hope is an annual team-based fundraiser benefiting patients in Northeast Mississippi with heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Community groups, neighborhoods, churches, businesses and individuals come together to make up the teams.
On Tuesday, the Green Street Gang team, made up of 25 members from NMMC’s clinic administration, marketing and physician recruitment departments, made $380 with a few donations still outstanding. They have other fundraisers planned in 2009.
“The good thing about this fundraiser is it’s all pure profit, because people volunteer to bring the salads” and other food, Via said. “Last year, through different events, our team raised $3,000 for Project Hope, which was kind of low, but it was our first year. I would love to hit $5,000 this year, but that’s a big jump.”
