Beautiful princesses, evil queens, kissable frogs and singing dwarves – it’s all there at the TCT Theatre Camp next week.
Tupelo Community Theatre’s Theatre Camp, open to students in grades 1 through 8, enters the world of fairy tales at The Lyric next week.
“We’re going to explore fables and fairy tales, and we are going to displace them in New York City,” said camp director Suzanne Oakley. “Some will recognize some of the stories – we’ll have Aesop and (Hans Christian) Anderson, and then some of the fairy tales that are even more familiar to people, like the ones that’ve been made into Disney movies.”
The tales will get a new twist at TCT’s Theatre Camp.
“We’re taking a wide variety of original text to come up with some modernized scripting,” Oakley said.
The students will be divided by age and then divided into smaller classes to learn theater basics, like singing and dancing, acting and art, costumes, props and set design. Students in first through fourth grades will meet in the morning, and fifth through eighth grades will meet in the afternoon.
Oakley is in charge of the music classes; Tupelo Middle School drama teacher Lindsay Brett will teach acting; and TCT set designer and TMS teacher Marianna Coffey will teach the art classes. Tupelo High School theater students and a few special guests will also be on hand to help out.
The camp culminates with performances on Friday, July 20. The younger kids will present a free show at The Lyric at 11:30 a.m., and the older kids will do the same at 4 p.m.
