Each songwriter has a story to tell, whether it’s in lyrics or in between songs.
Three powerful voices come together to do just that at the next Monthly Music Mix at the Link Centre. Mary Frances Massey, Kristian Dambrino and Ashley Rose are performing songs they’ve written and songs that inspire them, as well as share stories from their journeys to the stage.
“Women are writers, too,” Massey said, “and women’s voices need to be heard.”
Former Miss Mississippi Kristian Dambrino performed at a spring Monthly Music Mix show and impressed Tupelo singer Massey so much, she invited Dambrino back for this month’s show. Dambrino joins Massey and Ashley Rose, a singer-songwriter who went to college with Massey. Rose now works for Songwriter Girl, a company that brings together women and girls who seek creative empowerment.
Massey’s journey to the Link Centre stage includes many stages around the world. For three years, she performed nearly nightly on Royal Caribbean cruise ships in more than 30 countries.
“I loved meeting all those people from different backgrounds. I have friends all over the world,” she said. “I can go to Africa and visit people I know. It’s fun.”
Before she set sail, Massey was a part of Sound Wave and Wave Connection at Tupelo High School and completed the commercial entertainment program at Columbia State Community College in Tennessee, where she met Rose. Massey’s parents, Jim and Sarah Karrant, had a big part in shaping her musical style, so she’s asking them to join her on stage for the music mix gig.
She’ll bring her love for musical theater and classic rock to the show at the Link Centre. Each of the performers will play piano or guitar and their repertoire will “mostly be things we’ve written.”
Massey hopes the Monthly Music Mix can focus on women’s talents in songwriting.
“There are so many men in the music industry, and they get heard a lot,” she said. “But women have voices too.”
