TUPELO – For two nights only, “Debby’s Stardust Diner” will showcase Tupelo High School’s young talent.
On Friday and Saturday, the THS Thespians will transform the lobby of the Performing Arts Center into a cabaret.
“The first act will be classic Broadway songs,” said Ben Forrest, who’s serving as co-director of the show for his 2010 senior project. “Act II is mostly contemporary stuff.”
When you arrive at “Debby’s Stardust Diner,” which was named in honor of co-director and THS drama instructor Debby Gibbs, you’ll find tables filled with light hors d’oeuvres.
Then students will perform songs from “Annie Get Your Gun,” “Gypsy” and other favorite musicals.
Intermission will provide a chance to dip into a variety of flavors.
“Dessert will be cheesecake and chocolate cake and pound cake with strawberries,” Gibbs said.
The second half of the program will include songs from “Lion King,” “Legally Blonde” and “Wicked.”
It’s a casual affair. Some of the performers will sing to CD accompaniment, and others will be accompanied on piano by THS alumna Ashley Prince.
Proceeds from “Debby’s Stardust Diner” will help fund a summer trip to the International Thespian Festival in Lincoln, Neb.
“It’s going to be really laid back and a lot of fun,” Forrest said. “People can just come and have a good time.”
