TUPELO – Just ahead of what would have been Elvis’ 79th birthday, a tribute artist will pay tribute to the King of Rock ’n’ Roll at his birthplace.
David Lee, winner of the 2012 Tupelo Elvis Festival Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist preliminary competition, returns to Tupelo on Jan. 4 to receive a brick at the Elvis statue in Fairpark and to perform at the birthplace.
The brick was purchased by his fans in Tupelo and in his hometown of Birmingham, Ala., and there will be a brick dedication ceremony that day at 4:30 p.m.
“It’s an unbelievable honor. When you realize, when I’m dead and gone, it’ll still be there. That’s the biggest honor ever,” he said.
There will be a reception and concert at the birthplace following the dedication, with the concert beginning at 6 p.m.
“I’m more of a concert Elvis, a ’70s Elvis, so the good part is when Elvis was in concert he could do all of his songs. That gives me a much broader range. I’ll do some early songs, of course, and we’ll do ‘Suspicious Minds,’ some of the crowd favorites,” Lee said.
Lee stays busy traveling the world and performing as Elvis. In 2014, he’ll perform on a cruise traveling to Mexico and Canada, as well as at various shows across the country.
He’ll also compete in preliminary competitions so he can advance to the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist competition in Memphis in August.
“It’s all about Elvis Presley, and the whole goal is to keep his memory alive and to keep building new fans,” Lee said. “There’ll never be another Elvis. I’m just a big Elvis fan, trying to carry on the name.”
