TUPELO – For Greg Dillard’s third album, he’s stepping out on his own and onto sandy shores.
He recorded a rock album with his band Bliss, and then a country album with Busted Screen Door. For his first solo record, he’s gone the trop rock route.
“It has a beachier, island feel,” he said of his sound.
Trop rock, short for tropical rock, blends reggae, Calypso, country, rock and pop. Jimmy Buffett helped create the genre, and artists like Kenny Chesney and Jack Johnson have recorded trop rock songs and albums.
“I’ve always been a big fan of reggae music, Latin music. The songs I’d written had this flavor already, and then we’d change them to a more mainstream rock and country vibe,” Dillard said. “I’ve just always liked this style. It’s a timeless genre.”
Dillard’s new trop rock album, “Trapped in Paradise Again,” is out now. The album has already earned him a few new fans since it was featured on a trop rock radio station based in the Florida Keys.
Some songs on the album have more of a pop feel, while others sound more country. A laid-back, beachy feel ties the whole album together.
Dillard, 38, re-recorded an old favorite Busted Screen Door song, “TUI (Texting Under the Influence)” as a trop rock number for the new CD.
With “Trapped in Paradise Again” out now, Dillard is looking ahead.
“My goal is to have three projects in this style,” he said. “I already have CD cover ideas for two more CDs. I have four songs already written. I’m playing a wedding in Mexico next summer, and I hope to have something else to push then.”
Dillard has enjoyed exploring his favorite music genre.
“It’s something nobody around here is doing,” he said. “It reminds people of going to the beach and getting away and escaping.”
