Even if you figure he preached two sermons a week, which he didn’t always do, it still would have taken him 38 years.
The Rev. Thom Perry, pastor of Verona Christian Church, recently preached his 4,000th sermon. The topic? Leaving the comfort zone.
Perry was born in Tupelo and preached all over the southeastern U.S. before arriving at the Independent Christian congregation in Verona in 2006.
He preached his first sermon in his father’s church in Washington, N.C. His first stint as a senior pastor was in Belhaven, N.C. in 1962.
“When I first started out I wondered how I’d ever come up with two sermons a week,” said Perry, a father of two and grandfather of seven. “Then, you look back over 50 years or so and you see that’s it’s a lifetime of work. That’s kind of the way the Christian life is.”
