Vocal artist Terry Barber to entertain in Tupelo

By Sheena Barnett/NEMS Daily Journal

Terry Barber is a busy guy. The countertenor is performing in Tupelo next week, and that’s just one of many performances in his schedule for 2013.
He’s also working on a music program for schools in Florida, and he is over his own non-profit, Artists for a Cause, a group that organizes collaborations between artists and the charities they support.
“I think I’ll work till I fall over,” he said in a phone interview with the Journal.
But next up on his schedule is the Tupelo gig, presented by the Tupelo Concert Association.
Barber said his show is perfect for those who don’t think they like classical music.
“The program I put together is called ‘Classical for Everyone,’” which is also the name of his latest album, he said. “It’ll include people’s favorites. I hope there’s something anyone can enjoy. There are also some (songs) that will be new, but the first time you hear it, it’s something you’ll enjoy.”
Barber prides himself on his countertenor voice – meaning he can sing soprano, alto, tenor and baritone – and on his diverse song selections.
“I say it’s like ‘So You Think You Can Dance.’ Anyone can see the self-taught hip-hop dancer is trapped in that one thing they can do, but the dancer that is classically trained can jump from one style to another easily,” Barber said.
Thanks to his own training in classical music, he’ll share many styles of music at his Tupelo show.
He’ll be accompanied by Alina Kiryayeva, who he calls an “incredible pianist.”
All three of Barber’s CDs will be for sale at the show next week. In addition to his classical record, he’s recorded “A Sacred Journey” and “Songs She Loved,” an album full of his late mother’s favorite music.
He hopes he can reach fans of all styles of music in Tupelo.
“The best feedback I’ve heard is from people who say, ‘I don’t like classical music, but I loved it,’” he said. “Even if you don’t think you’ll enjoy it, come check it out.”
