TUPELO – For comedy fans, it’s like Christmas – if Christmas came once a week in a dark room full of comedians.
Tupelo’s own improv comedy group West of Shake Rag has announced it will start hosting weekly shows, in addition to monthly Saturday shows, starting tonight.
“The Saturday shows are the big events, the ones with a theme or a costume contest, and the whole family is recommended to go to that one,” said West of Shake Rag’s Casey Dillard. “Thursday shows are going to be a little more mature in theme and probably a little more long-form and experimental.”
All of the shows will still take place in the Black Box Theatre at the Link Centre, and they’re all $5.
Saturday’s shows begin at 7:30 p.m., while the Thursday shows will start at 7. The first weekly show is tonight.
Dillard said the group hopes to expand the comedy horizons with the Thursday shows.
West of Shake Rag, comprised of Dillard, Marley Maharrey, Kristyn Armour, Carlton Wall and Glenn Payne, will share the stage on Thursdays with Payne and Dillard’s duo comedy group, Stranger, Are You Smiling?
“We hope to include other teams from around the state, or stand-up comedians,” Dillard said.
The Thursday shows may be a bit more mature, but it won’t be completely profane.
“We will not be censoring ourselves as much, but it won’t be blue comedy,” she said.

Laugh it up
West of Shake Rag’s family-friendly monthly shows are at 7:30 p.m. the second Saturday of each month.
The slightly less than family-friendly weekly shows, which will include a mix of West of Shake Rag, Stranger Are You Smiling?, other improv troupes, stand-up comedians and more, will be at 7 p.m. every Thursday. The first weekly show is tonight.
All shows are $5 and are in the Black Box Theatre inside the Link Centre in Tupelo.
