Finney wins county spelling bee

HATLEY – Hatley School hosted the 2013 Monroe County Spelling Bee on Tuesday, Jan. 29, with 30 students competing for top speller in the county.

Students from fifth to eighth grade were eligible to participate in the event.  The schools participating were Amory, Hamilton, Hatley, and Smithville. Each school sent the top two spellers for each grade to the competition.
Megan Finney, an eighth-grader at Amory Middle School, beat out challenger Eli Black when she correctly spelled the word, “barrow.” Black was the second-place winner with Jaymes Harris coming in third. All three top winners are students at Amory Middle School. Each received prizes for their achievement.
