Amory Rotaries welcome the ‘Other Darryl’

AMORY – John Voldstad, most commonly known as the “other Darryl” on the “Newhart” television series for eight years during the 1980s, was the guest speaker at the Amory Rotary Club on Feb. 21. The actor also spoke to a couple of Peggy Holmes’ speech classes at Amory High School.

Voldstad was the guest speaker for Tony Poss, who he met in June 2012 at the Memphis Film Festival.
“I didn’t even know who he was, but thought he looked familiar. We struck with a conversation and quickly became friends. We have stayed in contact,” Poss said.
Voldstad shared with the group of how he got into the movie business, along with stories about some his movies and television shows and the people he worked with in the shows.
He has been in more than 40 television shows and movies. Some of the more memorable shows and movies in addition to the “Newhart” are “Coach,” “Home Improvement,” “Beverly Hills 90210,” “Forrest Gump,” “Hill Street Blues,” “Chico and the Man,” “Stripes” and “Knots Landing.”
Voldstad, who lives in Gadsden, Ala., is currently traveling and appearing in the musical “Deer Camp.” His “Newhart” brother Darryl, Tony Papenfuss, is also in the musical. The musical has received positive reviews.
