Taylor named Player of the Year

West Union received many accolades for their successful 2009 season in fast pitch softball, but none bigger than the one accomplished by their primary pitcher.

Danielle Taylor was honored by the division coaches as the Player of the Year for Division 4-1A, a feat that is big considering Taylor is only an eighth grader.

“It was a big achievement that I made,” Taylor said of being named player of the year. “I worked really hard and I’m proud of what I’ve done.”

Age wasn’t an issue for this pitcher, as she threw two no hitters in the regular season and helped lead the Lady Eagles to the North Half Championship, where West Union fell to Smithville.

Danielle is not the only pitcher on the staff, as her younger sister, Brittany, also pitches for West Union and relieved her older sister throughout the season. Danielle credits the success of both her and her sister to their father, who can be seen at every Lady Eagle game giving encouragement and advice to his daughters.

“He helps us with the fundamentals and works with us to remember what we need to do,” Taylor said of her father. “He makes sure we’re doing everything right.”

The Lady Eagles did a lot of things right in 2009, picking up the division title and will have even more to look forward to in 2010, as they will only lose one senior in Stephanie Hall. Taylor is proud of what the Lady Eagles accomplished this season and looks forward to what they can do next year.

“It should be a good year. We have so many coming back and it will be  a chance for us to do good things.”
