Hurricane News

The family of Inez (Todd)Robison will host a celebration in honor of her 94th birthday on Saturday, April 10 at the Sand Springs Community Church Fellowship Hall.

I thought about all the history that Aunt Inez has witnessed in Pontotoc County and our community since her birth in 1916.  Her residence on Todd Road is located near the old homeplace of her parents, the late Pole and Sallie (Sanders)Todd. She is one of those ladies that you admire as she always has a smile on her face and a spring in her step in her high heels at church and community events.

Betty Pierce enjoyed last week in the community as she visited with her aunt Geraldine Burchfield and other family members.  She had a business meeting in Jackson later in the week. While here, the beautiful spring weather kept her busy as she worked on the grounds of the Swords Estate at Shady Grove with the wisteria vines especially pretty and the fragrance is nice as well. She returned to Ohio for Easter Sunday at her home via Memphis/Atlanta Airports then Cleveland as the holiday travel caused delays.

Nelda Morgan of Hernando attended the Easter Sunday services with her mom, Geraldine Burchfield as it was good to see her there.

On Saturday night, April 3 they attended the fish fry that was catered by Malone’s at Hurricane Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.

Sue Spears, the great-grandmother of Mary-Kate Butler of Pontotoc, attended her baptismal service at West Heights Baptist Church on March 28.  This is Marquetta’s granddaughter, and the daughter of Buffie and Ken Butler.   The Spears family enjoyed Easter Sunday dinner with Sue on April 3.

Jimmie S. Warren hosted her children, Phil and Jill, and their families for Easter Sunday dinner at her home.

Birthday wishes to Jill Frohn for April 13.

Guide Browning and Erica Russell, both seniors at North Pontotoc, were participants in the Scholar’s Bowl group at Ole Miss.

Merle (Sills) Browning of Illinois enjoyed an extended spring visit with her sister, Corrine Williams, and husband Rayburn, at their Duncan Creek home.  She returned to Illinois with her son, Joe Browning, on Easter Sunday.  While here, she visited with Marlin and Faye Sills at Cane Creek.  Joe Browning visited with Graden and Martha Browning and other family members at Lone Star.  He is the son of the late Travis Browning.

Homecoming at Shady Grove Baptist Church will be held on the first Sunday in May (2).  Bro. Mike Johnson will be the guest speaker.  Special music will be presented by the Happiness Hills Girls of Philadelphia.  The traditional noon meal and afternoon singing will complete the day.  Pastor is Bro. David Barnett.

Sand Springs Community Church will host the annual homecoming on the third Sunday in May(16).  Pastor is Bro. Joe Morse.

Congratulations to Norris Ashley of Lone Star who was the Coach of the Year for boys basketball featured in the Daily Journal.   The Ingomar boys team won the State Championship for 2010 with Coach Ashley.

Dotsy(Norwood)Williamson of Eupora is busy this spring as she travels to attend the games of her granddaughter Edie Norwood Oliver, a senior at Delta State University and an outstanding pitcher for the softball team. Recently they were at Christian Brothers in Memphis. The next weekend they were in Arkadelphia, Arkansas for two games.  Dotsy works part-time at MSU as she travels for the university to observe the student teacher’s training in physical education.  She lived in Hurricane during her early years as her father, the late A.M. Norwood, Sr., coached at the school and has maintained friendships with former classmates from those days.

On Saturday, April 3 Brooke and Colt Hooker hosted a cookout and egg hunt for family.

Out of town guests were Ellie Moore and James Moore of Sarepta.   Great-grandmother Ellie helped Brantlee Moore and Braxton Moore dye the eggs as they enjoyed the beautiful sunshine.  Joining the Moores for the day were Sophie, Ella Kate, and Aden Hooker.

The spring revival is in progress April 4-8 at Hurricane Baptist Church at 7:00 p.m.  Bro. Don Savell is the guest preacher.  Bro. Phillip is pastor.

I enjoyed a visit with Jimmie and Ward Warren at their home on Warren Lane on April 3.  The beautifully landscaped lawn was especially pretty with the dogwoods and pear trees blooming as well as the lighted magnolias.  The entrance piers to their home and to their business adds to the beauty.

Sympathy is extended to the family of R. C. Perkins of Horn Lake who was the grandfather of Mrs. Perri(Bro. Phillip)Brock.
