County teams open slow pitch season at Myrtle

The Lady Hawks started the 2010 season on a good note, going 2-0 in their home tournament last weekend.

Myrtle picked up wins over Falkner (7-4) and Hickory Flat (11-7), and return several starters from last season’s north half finals squad.
“We started playing good at the right time last year, and we had a really good run in the playoffs beating good teams from Smithville and Wheeler.,” Myrtle head coach Robert Gordon said. “We have a lot of returners, and we’re trying to fill the holes from those three girls we lost who were pretty vital to the team last year. We lost four starters overall, and in those spots to fill, they’re going to be really young in that area.”
Returners for the Lady Hawks include Jenna Jordan, Meshay Cox and Emily Cook, who is coming off a good first season as the starting pitcher.
“She did a good job last year as an eighth grader with it being her first year playing,” Gordon said.
“We have primarily most of our infield back, minus our first baseman and two returning starters in the outfield. We just have to fill in the holes and see.”
New Albany also went 2-0 in the tournament, defeating Hickory Flat, 5-4 and East Union, 5-2. The Lady Urchins earned a win over West Union, 9-2, and the Lady Eagles opened the day with a 5-3 win over Ingomar. Falkner went 0-2, falling in their first game against Ingomar.
Myrtle will open the regular season against Tupelo on Thursday.
