Hurricane News, November 17, 2010
The fall harvest for the community for years gone by included cotton with the T. J. Hale Gin being a hub of activity at the intersection of Hwy. 346 and Thaxton Road. Recently as I drove through the “Nation” at the old “Rabbit Ranch” area there were fields of sweet potatoes being harvested. The south side of the community is also known as “Who'd A Thought It.”

Colt and Graden Hooker enjoyed a return deer hunting trip to Fulton County Illinois in early November. The next week Cade Hooker, Phil Warren and Phil Robbins hunted the same area. I enjoyed a call from J. R. Austin of Cave-in-Rock, Illinois, who reported that a good hunting season had started there at Lane Mountain on the Ohio River. Their other land borders the Shawnee National Forest on the Ohio which is a beautiful area reminiscent of the old CCC Road forest that was once in Lafayette County. The ferry is open as it is the main entrance and outlet to this river town.
Zane and Glenda Hale enjoyed a vacation to the Smoky Mountains during the autumn season.

Gracie Warren celebrated her sixth birthday on Nov. 9 with a party hosted by her parents Phil and Stephenie
Guide and Don Browning hunted in Madison County with Jon Lacy and Evan Browning this past weekend. Guide Browning celebrated his 19th birthday on Nov. 15. Guide is a freshman at ICC, and Evan is a student at MSU. They are the grandsons of Emily Browning of Germantown, Tenn., and of the late Lacy Browning of Ecru.
Susan and Braxton Hooker attended the Veteran's Day program at the Pontotoc Court Square on Nov. 11 as representatives of the family of the late Warren Norwood who served with the Occupational Forces in Japan, WWII.
Cap and Lou Gaston hosted a birthday dinner for their daughter, Susanne Wade and family, Barney, Karlie, and Clay Russell Wade, of Calhoun City on Nov. 12. A special guest was Marie(Morris)Russell of Union, one of our community's nonagenarians that participate in community events. Clay Russell Wade is a very athletic young man as he plays a variety of sports as the season's change. His grandfather, Cap Gaston, is a former coach and retired educator that enjoys his success.

Sympathy is extended to the family of Doyle Lamar Russell, retired Vice-Chancellor of Administration at the University of Mississippi, as he and his late wife, Melba Jean(Waldrop)Russell had built a new home at the Kendal Russell home place in Hurricane and had enjoyed ten years of their retirement here. He was the top scholar of the Class of 1947 at Hurricane High and continued his education at the University of Mississippi thus beginning his successful career at Ole Miss. Among those attending the services at Sand Springs Church and Cemetery from out of town include the following: His daughter, Angela(Jim)Browning and family; Dr. Richard(Jackie)Russell, all of New Albany; Dr, Stanley Russell of Jackson; and Jeannette(Russell)Jarrett, Memphis;Larry and Pam Russell, Pontotoc.
Sympathy is extended to the family of Toy Lamar Rutledge of Clarinda, Iowa who was the son of Bro. Wayne and Ila(Gregory)Rutledge of the community.
Sympathy is extended to the family of Madge Joyner of Robbs who was the great-grandmother of Eric(Charley)Conlee.
(Community Yesteryears)On November 10, 1935 a plane crash killed three young men from the community:Lamon Graham, Henry Graham, and Bud Warren, all of Sand Springs, as well as Dean Falkner, the younger brother of author William Faulkner of Oxford. Ironically, a wing fell off the plane and landed near the future grave sites of the community residents and crashed near the home of Henry Graham, a short distance away. Several thousand people flooded the community after the news of the crash as well as for the funeral for the local men whose services were held outside the Sand Springs Church. This account can be found in Joseph Blotner's Faulkner as well as the Commercial Appeal.
